SAIC is one of the big e-car manufacturers in China. In the ranking of the most successful representatives of this business, SAIC was the third largest supplier in China last year with 44.236 delivered e-cars and plug-in hybrids.
In cooperation with its partner SAIC, Volkswagen is launching the construction of the first plant especially for electric cars in China on the basis of the new Modular Electrification Modular System MEB. The approximately $ 2.5 billion manufacturing plant in Shanghai is scheduled to go into operation in October 2020.

Both partners intend to produce up to 300,000 MEB Stromers annually for the VW, Audi and Skoda brands as well as battery systems there. The factory will be the seventh plant of the joint venture, raising total production output to 2.4 million cars. The proportion of electricity in total sales is expected to rise gradually. The MEB plays a key role here.
